If you’re like the majority of Americans, you have excess fat under your chin and neck that bothers you. An alternative to an invasive cosmetic surgery to remove this layer of fat is an outpatient injectable treatment called KYBELLA®.
KYBELLA was FDA-approved in 2015 and has been used since then to help patients who suffer from submental fullness, or a double chin. This condition can be caused by weight gain, aging, and genetics.
How It Works
A synthetic version of the naturally occurring deoxycholic acid, KYBELLA kills fat cells in the area under the chin where the medicine is injected. This means that fat can no longer be stored or accumulate at the injection sites. The result is a more defined and attractive facial profile.
Most patients see an improvement after two treatments but often up to six are needed to achieve the desired effect.
What to Expect
During your first consultation, our practitioner will need to know your medical history, including any cosmetic surgeries you have had previously on your face, neck, or chin. If you are planning to have surgery, be sure to tell your practitioner. Also, any difficulties with swallowing, bleeding problems, or pregnancy or nursing, could affect whether KYBELLA is a good option for you.
Once you have been deemed a viable candidate for KYBELLA, you should take a few simple precautions. To get ready for your procedure, take extra care to thoroughly wash your face to help prevent infection. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen can contribute to bruising after the procedure, so avoid taking them.
Before any injections are administered, up to 50 sites may be marked where the needle will penetrate the skin under your chin. You could also receive a numbing balm or have an ice pack placed on the area to reduce pain.
The injection portion of the procedure will last 15 to 20 minutes. It will vary based on how much fat you have to lose and the results you desire.
Unlike some other injectable treatments you may have received, KYBELLA requires a few sessions to take full effect. The number of times you need will depend on a few factors, such as the distribution of your submental fat and your personal goals. You must wait at least one month between treatment sessions, and you can receive up to six treatments.
While KYBELLA is a comparatively safe procedure in relation to more extensive and invasive surgeries, like facelifts, there are some potential side effects to keep in mind. Common issues to expect range from pain and swelling to numbness and bruising. These usually dissipate within two weeks of the procedure. If you experience more severe problems, such as weakness of the facial muscles, hair loss at the injection site, difficulty swallowing, a crooked smile, or nerve injury, inform us immediately so we can address them.
