What Options We Have to Help Sleep Apnea

Posted on 7/26/2021 by The Facial Center
What Options We Have to Help Sleep ApneaSleep apnea is a condition where a patient stops breathing for a short time while sleeping. This occurs because the soft tissues in the back of the mouth collapse and block the air flow. Several methods are used to treat the condition. Sleep apnea may result from obesity, the use of tranquilizers or alcohol, or take place while snoring.

Using an Oral Appliance

Patients with less severe forms of sleep apnea can wear an oral appliance, often successfully. This form of therapy ensures that a patient with sleep apnea can sleep without worry, as the the mouth guard is designed to open up the airway and facilitate increased respiration.

Using CPAP Machines

A popular treatment for moderate to severe sleep apnea is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. This equipment features various masks used for the treatment process. When a mask is worn, a pressurized air flow is directed into the throat, which prevents the airway from collapsing.

Surgical Options

In some cases, a patient may gain relief by having surgery. Usually undergoing a procedure for sleep apnea will also stop snoring, if the condition is triggered by the activity. We need to carefully examine the bite and mouth to develop a surgical plan for treatment. One of the surgeries we may recommend is maxillo-mandibular advancement. During this procedure, we move the upper and lower jaw forward, which increases the size of the airway. We may also add palatal implants, or small plastic rods in the soft palate. The implants stiffen the soft palate so the soft tissue in the back of the mouth will not block the entrance of the airway.

If you have problems with sleep apnea, we may be able to offer a permanent solution through surgery. Give us a call today to book a consultation and exam. We can arrange a time that fits well with your current daily schedule of activities.
