The root canal treatment, also known as the endodontic procedure, is a four-step process. It usually takes between one to two sessions for the endodontists to complete this surgical procedure.
Step 1 - Numbing with Anesthesia
The endodontist locates and examines the affected tooth by performing an X-ray. Once the exact location is known, anesthesia is injected to numb the area that needs to be operated on. After that, a small protective sheet called 'dental dam' is placed over the spot to keep the tooth clean and free of saliva during the treatment.
Step 2 - Cleaning and Shaping the Root Canal
The endodontist makes a few small cuts on the tooth's crown once the affected area is numb. Then, excavators and barbed broaches extract the dead or infected pulp from the pulp chamber. Endodontists clean the hollowed area with an irrigation solution, after which they shape the root canal to stuff the gap with a temporary filling.
Step 3 - Filling and Sealing the Infected Tooth
A rubber-like material called gutta-percha is filled into the gap after it is cleaned from infections and bacteria. This biocompatible material is composed of adhesive cement, which seals the tooth opening, preventing all kinds of bacterial infection.
Step 4 - Placing a Crown or Other Restoration
Gutta-percha usually works as a temporary sealing element, and it is later replaced with a tooth or other restoration material when the operated area is healed. In the meantime, your endodontist gives the necessary instructions to care for the operated area in the upcoming days. Until the crown is permanently installed, patients are advised to avoid chewing food that may cause unnecessary pain.
